Theodor Schwann

Theodor Schwann (1810-1822) was born in Neuss Germany and studied in Born University, Wurzburg, and Berlin. He becomes a professor of anatomy in Leuven University and Liege University in Belgium. Schwann had proven that adult tissue could be traced from the embryonic cells.

When he worked under Johannes Muller, Schwann discovered a digestive enzyme in stomach lining and he named its pepsin. At Muller suggestion, Schwann began his research on muscle contraction and discovered striated muscle in the upper portion of the esophagus. He also identified the delicate sheath of cells surrounding peripheral nerve fibers, which is now named after him, the sheath of Schwann.
